Power is supplied via a central 48V power supply unit.

What is the difference between PowerLayer and PowerBoard?

It is simply installed and electrically connected by drywall installers.

How many volts does the system use?

FLEXFY works with 48 volts direct current (DC) in the system. The conversion from 230 V AC is carried out centrally via a power supply unit that is installed in the base or technical area. This low voltage is considered particularly safe (SELV) and allows simple, tool-free handling without the need for a qualified electrician.

The efficiency of the FLEXFY system is around 90%. This is significantly higher than many conventional power supply solutions, as the central conversion from mains voltage to direct current is designed to be particularly efficient.

What loads and services are possible?

Each PowerPlug can provide up to 100 watts of power, depending on the type. There are versions with and without a dimming function for lights. Special DC plugs with 50W or 100W are available for other consumers such as sensors, USB chargers or gateways. The maximum total load per power supply unit is 350 to 500 watts.

The current carrying capacity varies depending on the plug type. Standard luminaire plugs are designed for typical LED loads, while more powerful plugs deliver up to 100W at 48V DC.

Within the specified system limits (max. 5 m length and 10 m width from the feed-in point), the power loss is minimal. The cable is laid taking into account the maximum cable length to the contact strip (5 m) in order to avoid voltage losses.

Is there electromagnetic radiation?

The system has been tested for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and has passed all the necessary tests. The 48V DC is considered to be particularly low-radiation. There are no known effects on mobile radio or WLAN.

Yes, due to the low voltage and low magnetic fields, there is no known risk for wearers of medical implants. However, if in doubt, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

How does the control of luminaires work?

It is controlled via wireless radio systems. FLEXFY is currently compatible with the Casambi system so that switches and scenarios can be conveniently configured via app or wall module.

Do I still need a 230V line?

Accepted Answer

FLEXFY does not replace the entire conventional electrical installation. For some applications - such as household appliances with high power requirements, large socket loads or central technology connections - a supplementary 230V cable is still useful or necessary. This can be laid as usual and in accordance with standards.

At the same time, FLEXFY enables a significant reduction in classic sockets, as many modern devices - such as tablets, smartphones, lights or sensors - can increasingly be operated or charged via USB-C. The FLEXFY PowerPlugs allow USB-C charging points to be flexibly integrated exactly where they are needed in everyday life. For many applications, a combination of a central mains connection and decentralized 48V infrastructure is therefore completely sufficient.

Can the FLEXFY system also be installed on ceilings?

Yes, the FLEXFY PowerLayer system can be installed on both walls and ceilings. Even sloping or difficult to access surfaces are possible. The system offers great advantages, especially in the ceiling: There are no cable outlets, luminaires can be freely positioned and rearranged at any time.

FLEXFY can be applied to all load-bearing, dry and even substrates - e.g. plasterboard, concrete, plaster or wood-based panels. It is important that the substrate does not contain any electrically conductive materials such as metal and is suitable for receiving filler and fleece layers.

How thick is the layer structure overall?

The entire system structure is only approx. 4 mm thick and consists of the electrically conductive surface fleece, the magnetically active filler and the final surface coating (e.g. paint or wallpaper). This means that FLEXFY is also suitable for renovations with limited installation space.

How flexible is the system when redesigning?

Very flexible: lights and electronic devices are positioned using magnetically attached PowerPlugs. These can be removed at any time and re-inserted at another location. Small puncture marks can simply be painted over or, if necessary, removed with an eraser.

Are there fixed power connection points?

No. The big advantage of FLEXFY is the wide-area power supply. The power is available over the entire electrified area. The PowerPlugs can be placed anywhere and collect the power exactly where it is needed.

How do you drill or nail to the wall?

Drilling is generally permitted if the power supply is switched off beforehand. Insulating plastic plugs must be used. The use of nails is not recommended as this can cause damage and, in the worst case, short circuits. Heavier loads may only be attached using accessories approved by FLEXFY.

In principle, almost all interior surfaces can be electrified as long as the above-mentioned requirements regarding substrate, load-bearing capacity and material compatibility are met. Whether new construction, renovation or existing buildings - FLEXFY adapts to the conditions.

Yes, the system can be used for both full-surface and partial applications. Popular variants include horizontal strips, the upper wall zone for light or individual segments for digital signage. The electrified surfaces can be individually planned and cut to size.

How many steps does the installation involve and how long does it take?

Installation by trained painting companies is carried out in several coordinated work steps: priming (if necessary), application of the surface conductor, filling of the magnetically active layer, installation of the contact strips, intermediate sanding and final decorative coating. Due to drying times, the total installation time is approx. 5 days, depending on the surface, whereby the pure working time for smaller surfaces is significantly less.

What safety standards does FLEXFY meet?

The system works with safe extra-low voltage (48V DC, SELV) and meets the requirements of DIN EN 60664 for insulation coordination in electrical low-voltage systems. It has been developed in accordance with all relevant standards for low voltage, EMC, fire protection and mechanical stress. The components undergo strict quality and safety tests.

FLEXFY has been tested for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), thermal resistance, electrical safety and mechanical adhesion, among other things. The system achieves fire protection class A2 in accordance with DIN EN 13501 and has passed the AgBB test for low-emission building products. What happens if the surface is damaged?

In the event of slight mechanical damage (e.g. punctures caused by PowerPlugs), no impairment is to be expected. In the event of severe damage, the power supply should be disconnected immediately and the surface checked by a specialist company. No nails or metal objects may be driven into the active surface.

Only PowerPlugs and end devices tested and approved by FLEXFY may be used on FLEXFY surfaces. The use of third-party electronics or purely magnetic objects is at your own risk and can lead to safety problems or functional failures.

What should I bear in mind when using metallic top coats?

No conductive or metallic paint, plaster or wallpaper may be used as the final surface. These can cause short circuits or malfunctions during operation. We recommend high-quality emulsion paints or thin-layer, non-metallic wallpaper.

Do FLEXFY devices have to be inspected regularly, e.g. in accordance with DGUV V3?

FLEXFY devices are considered portable electrical equipment with safety extra-low voltage (SELV) and do not require testing by qualified electricians. Visual and functional tests, such as those carried out by a janitor or plant manager, are sufficient.

The magnetic connection technology enables luminaires and devices to be used repeatedly without the need for new interventions in the wall or ceiling. In addition, many FLEXFY devices can be built in a more resource-efficient way than conventional 230V devices, as they no longer require their own power supply unit. The central conversion reduces complexity and the amount of material used in the end devices.

Can the system be dismantled?

The FLEXFY system is designed for permanent integration indoors. With the PowerLayer system, the strong adhesive bond ensures permanent stability - this can only be removed mechanically with great effort (e.g. by sanding). In practice, the power supply is usually disconnected, the contact strips removed and the system plastered over. It remains functionally in the wall, comparable to a built-in installation. With PowerBoard, on the other hand, dismantling is possible, although it is difficult to separate the materials by type. FLEXFY is deliberately designed as a long-lasting infrastructure that remains in place permanently and can be used flexibly.

How are the components disposed of?

The FLEXFY components can always be separated. Electronic components such as power supply units and PowerPlugs must be disposed of as electronic waste. The remaining system materials usually remain in the wall or ceiling, but can be removed with suitable tools as part of a large-scale conversion.

Thanks to the central voltage conversion to 48V DC and short distances within the electrified area, the system works very efficiently. The efficiency is around 90%. How resource-efficient is the use of aluminum in the system?

In the FLEXFY PowerLayer system, aluminum is applied in the form of fine, 50 micrometer-thick conductor tracks. The individual strips are only 16 mm wide and are spaced 3 mm apart in the wall or ceiling. Although this means that aluminum is laid over a large area, only a fraction of this surface is actually actively used. However, its use is deliberate: FLEXFY unfolds its full sustainability potential particularly in rooms that are reused, restructured or redesigned several times over their lifetime. In such scenarios, the system is more resource-efficient than conventional installations, as it avoids repeated interventions in the building fabric and can be used flexibly.

How do I become a certified FLEXFY painting company?

Only painting companies with completed training and experience in the installation of smooth wall systems can take part. A “small electrical license” (electrician for defined activities) is helpful, but not mandatory. Teams or entire companies can also be trained.
